Until 1 August 2009, David Coyne was the Director for Coordination of the European Social Fund (ESF) at the European Commission, having previously held posts as Director for Education, and Director for Education and Training Policy. He has long experience coordinating EU programmes in the Education and Training field, as well as in negotiating labour market and education/ training programmes with national Ministries. His earlier career at the Commission included other work in education, training and youth work, as well as on social capital and the third sector; and private office support for Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan, responsible at various times for anti-trust policies, enlargement and external relations. He currently supports a number of projects in the higher and secondary education field.
